The Williams Institute at UCLA has released a new survey of the “Adult LGBT Population in the United States,” including a state-by-state (and the District of Columbia) breakdown, and five of the six New England states have the highest percentage of LGBT adults in the country.
At 7.4%, Vermont came in with the highest percentage of LGBT adults in New England—ranking number 5 in the country—with a total of 37,600 LGBT people age 18 and up.
New Hampshire ranked number 6 at 7.2%, with 78,400 LGBT adults.
Massachusetts (with 356,200 LGBT adults), Maine (69,900 LGBT adults) and Rhode Island (54,800 LGBT adults) tied for the number 10 spot with 6.5% each.
Connecticut, with 170,500 LGBT adults, tied with Missouri at number 13 with 6.0%.
The study also found that that national US average is currently 5.6%, comprised of 14,090,400 LGBT adult Americans. Among the states and Washington, DC, the top spot went to DC with 14.3% of its adult population, or 81,400 people, identifying as LGBT.
