GLAD Law reminds students and parents: LGBTQ+ students still have rights and protections at school

A message from GLAD Law:

LGBTQ+ students, like all students, deserve to be safe at school. The Department of Education has formally restored the 2020 Title IX regulations [i.e., removing the 2024 Biden administration rule stating that sex discrimination under Title IX included discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation].

But that action does not mean LGBTQ+ students have lost their legal protections. The Department itself says this restoration does not change the substantive rules already in effect. LGBTQ+ students continue to have rights under federal and state law, including protections against sex-based harassment and discrimination.

GLAD Law remains committed to helping students who experience harassment and bullying at school. If you’re a student, parent, educator, or advocate who has experienced or witnessed bullying or harassment of LGBTQ+ students, please consider sharing your story to help us spot trends and strengthen protections.
