Representation isn’t symbolic—it’s structural. When LGBTQ+ candidates run for office, they bring lived experience to policy debates that too often unfold without anyone in the room who’s actually navigated discrimination, health care barriers or family recognition firsthand.
Massachusetts—and all New England—has long been a proving ground for LGBTQ+ political leadership, and the 2026 midterms continue that tradition with candidates seeking seats from town halls to Congress. Whether or not any single race centers LGBTQ+ issues, having openly queer voices at every level of government shapes which questions get asked—and whose constituents get seen.
