Open Sky Community Services, a nonprofit behavioral health and human services organization, today announced that its Safe Homes program received the 2024 Community Activism Award by the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS).  The nonprofit accepted the recognition on Nov. 9 at the National Organization for Human Services 2024 Conference in New Orleans, La.

“On behalf of all of us at Open Sky, we are honored to be the recipient of this year’s Community Activism Award,” said Open Sky President & CEO Ken Bates.  “Safe Homes has supported LGBTQIA+ youth in finding their voice and connecting with peers and mentors in a safe environment since its inception nearly thirty years ago.  Our outstanding program leaders and community partners are fully deserving of this recognition from the National Organization for Human Services.”

Safe Homes supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA+) young people and their straight allies, between the ages of 14 and 23 throughout Central Massachusetts.  The program is led by youth peer leaders, professional staff and volunteers, offering educational programming, leadership training, free mental health counseling, referrals, recreational activities and emergency supports.  The program serves youth in Worcester as well as North Worcester County, and has an active online community to serve individuals outside of the region.

“Open Sky’s unwavering commitment to creating a more equitable society is evident through its innovative programs and strategic partnerships,” said award nominator and Employment Options Executive Director Shannon Leary.  “Safe Homes has become a beacon of hope and support for LGBTQIA+ youth, and Open Sky’s leadership, compassion, and integrity are truly inspiring.”

The Community Activism Award celebrates the outstanding contributions of individuals, groups or organizations that have demonstrated a deep commitment to social justice and have made significant impacts in their local, state, regional, national or international communities. This award recognizes those who tirelessly advocate for equity, engage in activism and inspire others to improve society through concerted, meaningful actions.
