Dallas Ducar, CEO of Transhealth Northampton — the first independent trans health care center in the US, which opened earlier this year in Northampton, Mass. — is among a select group of nominees up for LGBTQ Nation’s 2021 “Hero Keeping Us Healthy” award.
Ducar, who’s also served as clinical lead for mental health services at the Massachusetts General Hospital Transgender Health Program, is in fine company. Her fellow nominees include Centers for Disease Control statistician Michael Donnelly; Harold Phillips, the new AIDS czar appointed by President Biden; Colorado Governor Jared Polis; and Dr. Stephaun Wallace, who worked to ensure COVID-19 vaccines are reaching communities of color, notes LGBTQ Nation.
In an interview with Boston Spirit magazine earlier this year, Ducar explained how her own experience transitioning, and the experiences of so many others she saw, moved her to become the founding CEO of this groundbreaking trans-led organization: “Seeing all the gatekeeping barriers to access, and the number of trans people dying because of lack of access, floored me. It also showed me that we can do better—and we need to do better,” she said. “We’re trying to advance what care can look like,” she said.
You can cast a vote for Ducar, or one of her fellow nominees in a range of heroic categories, on the LGBTQ Nation Hero of the Year web page.
