If you’ve ever found yourself defending Madonna’s Instagram account to a 20-something at a gay bar, you know that ageism is a real thing when it comes to expressions of sexuality. Indeed, in much of the media, sexiness is exclusively associated with youth—and often, straightness too. Not so in queer artist Samantha Nye’s exhibition at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, a collection of music video-like vignettes that place primarily older and LGBTQ women, from lesbian leather daddies to nonbinary models, in empowered erotic contexts. Set to tunes of the 1950s and ’60s (think: Neil Sedaka’s “Calendar Girl”), they are celebrations of sexuality we too rarely get to see.
