Kelly Ransom, an openly LGBTQ native Bostonian, announced her candidacy on April 6 to run for city council. If elected, she’ll represent District 6 — Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury — where she’s a lifelong resident and worked from an early age as an advocate for LGBTQ, homeless and other marginalized communities.
She would replace Matt O’Malley, who is the city council’s president and after 10 years is not seeking reelection. To date, Ransom has two competitors vying for the seat, Kendra Hicks and Mary Tamer.
Reports Jamaica Plain News:
Ransom currently works at Madison Park Development Corporation as the director of communications & public affairs. She has worked in the restaurant industry, was a former City Council staffer, and is a supporter of labor unions.
She announced her candidacy outside of the shuttered Bella Luna restaurant on Tuesday. Ransom is queer, an advocate and ally for marginalized communities, and previously personally experienced being homeless.
At her announcement to run, Ransom said:
We’ve seen monumental historic strides in Boston this past year, but there is more work to be done.
Together, we will implement community driven, equitable, and pragmatic solutions at City Hall with residents, partners, and stakeholders, work with our partners at the State House, and involve surrounding municipalities to push for significant, transformative regional solutions inclusive of everybody.
I am prepared for our unified journey to equitable, accessible, inclusive, and holistic change in District Six. Above all else, I am eager to advocate & help my neighbors by connecting them to resources, services, and City departments as a Boston City Councilor. From policy to potholes, I’ll be by your side. Now, I must go. It’s time for me to get to work for YOU.
