Unfortunately, and for a very long time, the powerful contributions of LGBTQ people of color to equal rights movements have gone underrecognized by even some of the most significant social justice organizations. For more than 30 years, though, AIDS Action in Boston has honored the work of Bayard Rustin—an openly gay, Black civil rights champion and chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington—through a community breakfast that acknowledges local leaders who follow in his footsteps. This year, AIDS Action will award activists Athena Vaughn, cofounder of the new organization Trans Resistance MA, and Oriol Gutierrez, editor-in-chief of “POZ” magazine. And in light of the pandemic, the event has gone virtual. That means you can take your morning coffee from the comfort of your own home, and still hear inspired words from breakfast speakers like Mass. Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Darnell Williams, former longtime executive director of the Urban League of Massachusetts, who will deliver the keynote.
