This just in from MassEquality:
[Yesterday], members of the Massachusetts legislature invited members of a known anti-LGBTQ hate group to the state house for a rally and press conference in order to promote discriminatory bills impacting transgender youth.
The Massachusetts Family Institute is an organization which has been actively promoting anti-LGBTQ policies at the state and local level and been engaging in disinformation campaigns and encouraging hateful propaganda against our communities across the Commonwealth.
“It sickens me to see that any legislator in Massachusetts would partner with this organization to incite fearmongering and disinformation at the expense of children,” says MassEquality Executive Director Tanya Neslusan.
An Act to ensure fairness and safety in school sports (SD 627/HD 297) are bills being introduced by Senator Ryan Fattman and Representative John Gaskey to try to impede the participation of transgender student athletes in school sports. Cosigners on the House side include Representatives Justin Thurber, Marc Lombardo and Steven George Xiarhos.
Neslusan goes on to say that “the transgender community is under attack at the federal level right now, and that we do not expect this bill to gain traction here in Massachusetts. We are profoundly disturbed that this bill would be introduced and that any of our legislators would introduce something that would target children who want nothing more than to play soccer and basketball like anyone else. They should be ashamed of themselves.”
MassEquality is committed to committed to supporting legislation that fosters respect, dignity, and equal access to sports for every student, no matter their gender identity encourages lawmakers and all stakeholders to loudly condemn An Act to Ensure Fairness and Safety in School Sports.
