Boston Mayor Michelle Wu announced the creation of a new Office of LGBTQ+ Advancement yesterday to “empower, protect and promote the rights, dignity and advancement of Boston’s LGBTQ+ residents,” state a May 23 press release from the city.
Reports WCVB-TV 5:
The Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ+ Advancement “will be responsible for developing policy, community oriented programming, and providing resources for the city’s multiracial, multi-generational, multicultural and multilingual LGBTQ+ community,” according to a news release from the city.
The city is looking for an executive director to head off the office.
Previously, work with the city’s LGBTQ community was led by community liaisons in the Office of Neighborhood Services.
“City Hall can do much more to ensure that we are truly connecting with and serving LGBTQ+ residents across all of our neighborhoods,” said Wu, “This new office will ensure that our policies and programs are advancing and protecting the rights and dignity of Boston’s LGBTQ+ residents and centering the lived experiences of queer, trans BIPOC residents in the City’s work to make Boston a place for everyone.”
The city has yet to announce a plan for a Pride parade in June or whether one will be held.
Last year, Boston Pride dissolved after more than 50 years, with the organization saying it hoped new leaders from the community would emerge.
