The Human Rights Campaign announced its 2026 list of “Equality 100 Award: Leader in LGBTQ+ Workplace Inclusion” honorees from their annual Corporate Equality Index. This year, 68 of them are based in New England. Overall the numbers were lower this year, reflecting a 65% drop in reporting from Fortune 500 companies, directly corresponding with the Trump administration’s attacks on DEI throughout the country. However New England still proved a leader in this troubled environment, with over 300 large employers from the region participating, with more than 20 percent of them perfect-score earners and all 300+ working hard in many ways to support equity in their workplaces.
“Our research shows the strength and the strain of this moment on LGBTQ+ workers, consumers and the companies that count on us,” HRC President Kelley Robinson said in a statement.
Of the 1,450 companies that participated this year, 534 earned a score of 100, representing nearly 6 million U.S. employees, according to HRC.
“To earn top ratings, [Equality 100 awardees] took concrete steps to establish and implement comprehensive policies, benefits and practices that ensure greater equity for LGBTQ workers and their families,” noted HRC.
HRC’s Corporate Equality Index is the national roadmap and benchmarking tool for US businesses (and now including municipal employers) to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality in the workplace.
Ratings criteria include workforce protections, inclusive benefits, supportive and inclusive culture, corporate social responsibility, and responsible citizenship.
In New England, Massachusetts was the frontrunner once again, with 49 Equality 100 Award-winners. In Connecticut, nine companies earned scores of 100. Rhode Island came in with seven perfect scores, New Hampshire with two, and Maine with one.
