Boston Mayor Wu, hundreds LGBTQ+ community members, allies and city officials cheered as the LGBTQ+ Progress flag was raised over Boston City Hall yesterday, Monday, June 2, for Pride month.
Reports the Boston Globe:
Decked out in rainbow colors and holding various identity flags, they celebrated for two hours at lunchtime Monday in front of City Hall. They brought high energy to the annual ceremony, dancing to music by the Jamaica Plain Honk Band and cheering as activists and city leaders spoke about the month’s importance.
“It is amazing to feel the energy, joy, and pride as we kick off this celebration,” Mayor Michelle Wu told the crowd. Wu and other speakers acknowledged the Trump administration’s hostility toward certain members of the community and pledged to continue making the city a safe place for all.
On her website, Mayor Wu posted:
Pride is, at its core, a celebration of freedom and love. It’s the freedom to be who we are, to love who we love. The freedom to see ourselves, and each other, how we want to be seen, to love without shame, without judgment, or fear.
Pride is also a celebration of courage, the courage it takes to live authentically. And today, on City Hall Plaza, we proudly raised the Pride flag honoring that courage and recommitted to building a city where being yourself doesn’t require bravery. Where our LGBTQ+ residents are not just accepted, but protected, supported, and celebrated.
Thank you to everyone who joined us today, and to our Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ+ Advancement for leading the amazing work that they do every day.
Boston is proud to be your home.
