Redefining ‘sex’?
Enacted in 1972, Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school program that receives government funding, and has come to be understood as protecting transgender students.
However, the Foster School District recently changed the definition of sex on its website, stating that the district “recognizes ‘sex’ as a binary biological attribute (male or female) determined at birth.”
Subsequently, according to independent reporter Steve Ahlquist, the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) sent them an email to remind them of state and federal laws regarding protections for transgender, gender diverse and transitioning students. In addition, RIDE mentioned that the plan to consider the issue in executive session appeared to be a violation of the State’s Open Meetings Act. The definition has since been removed from the website.
Nonbinary educator contracts
Providence City Council President Rachel Miller has publicly defended three nonbinary Providence public school teachers who were issued letters of non-renewal “with seemingly little explanation.” All three are active in the Providence Teacher’s Union.
The nonrenewal process is governed by state law, and is a performance-based standard. At least one of the individuals named boasts a teacher evaluation score of 380 out 0f 400. “In light of the current federal administration’s antipathy and antagonism toward both LGBTQ+ protections and labor organizing, seeing queer and transgender union members pulled out of their classrooms and delivered notices with seemingly little explanation is sure to raise alarm,” Miller said in a statement.
On my honor
In collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England, the Wanderground Lesbian Library & Archives held a gathering for lesbians who are former Girl Scouts, camp counselors, troop leaders or others involved in Girl Scouting.
Attendees shared their experiences, stories of women who had experienced discrimination or dismissal from GS in past years, as well as stories of coming out, finding one’s life partner, or just the joys of being in a safer space where girls could feel strong and be themselves. Future events may be possible.
