A bomb threat was delivered to an art center in Newton, Massachusetts last week prior to a drag queen story hour. According to a report from MassLive.com:
On Sunday around 10:10 a.m., New Art Center received a message that bombs had been placed on the roof of their building, Executive Director Emily O’Neil said in a press release. The message threatened that the building would “go boom” at 11 a.m.
The threat did not directly reference the drag queen story hour that the center had scheduled for 11 a.m., O’Neil said. But many drag queen story hour events at other venues have been targeted with bomb threats in recent months.
Staff at the center immediately called Newton police, who then searched and cleared the facility, O’Neil said. Officers did not find any evidence that the threat was credible, Newton police said in a statement.
Many families chose to forgo attending the drag queen story hour after the threat, but about 30 families stayed for the event with drag queen Missy Steak, O’Neil said. This is the first time New Art Center has received a bomb threat in its nearly 50-year history.
“Insane to me that an event with children was the target of a domestic terror threat and people in the comments are still debating on my right to exist,” Steak wrote in a Wednesday Facebook post.
