With far-right politicians and advocates of anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination stirring up heated sentiment across the country and around the world, the Boston Globe reports that New England earned the top spots, on a national study, as the safest and most friendly states in the US for LGBTQ+ travelers.
The rating comes from Equaldex, an online database that tracks LGBTQ rights worldwide, notes the Globe, and the top LGBTQ-friendly states in the country are:
- Vermont
- Massachusetts
- Connecticut
- New Hampshire
- Rhode Island
- Maine (basically tying with California, New York and Washington to take the sixth spot)
As the Globe reports:
Last week, the largest LGBTQ+ civil rights group in the United States took the unprecedented step of issuing a travel warning for gay tourists contemplating a trip to Florida.
The warning from the Human Rights Campaign, which came on the heels of sweeping anti-gay and anti-trans laws passed by the state, doesn’t call for a boycott of travel to Florida but warns that newly passed laws and policies may pose risks to minorities, immigrants, and gay travelers. The NAACP, the League of United Latin American Citizens, the Florida Immigrant Coalition, and Equality Florida have all issued warnings about travel to the Sunshine State.
Sounds like this year is an especially good time for local travelers to enjoy our own beautiful region, and to welcome others seeking a friendlier alternative for a great getaway from everywhere near and far.
