Today, Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is launching the release of a new full-length documentary — now available on Amazon Prime — focusing on their 20-years-plus globe-spanning travels as culture ambassadors. The documentary, “Music Triumphs Homophobia,” was written and directed by multiple award-winning filmmakers Michael Willer and Craig Coogan
The documentary covers the ways in which the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has used concert tours through regions of the world not accustomed to seeing out gay/trans artists performing high quality music about queer themes — and the impact that these tours have had in fostering acceptance and respect for LGBTQIA+ people.
Using archival material, contemporary tour and news footage, interviews with past and present chorus members and BGMC staff, and commentary from activists, audience members, arts advocates and political leaders, “Music Triumphs Homophobia,” traces BGMC’s growth as “cultural ambassadors” from its first organized tour through rural New England in 1992 to Eastern Europe in 2005, the Middle East in 2015, and South Africa in 2018.
As states across the country are banning LGBTQIA+-themed books, classroom discussions of LGBTQIA+ issues, and access to affirming health care for transgender youth, “Music Triumphs Homophobia” is a timely demonstration of music’s power as a healing balm and an effective tool in the fight against persistent anti-LGBTQIA+ hatred and violence.
