Only three short years after the Stonewall Rebellion, gays and lesbians in Boston founded the Gay Speakers Bureau to share the personal stories of our community to open minds and change oppressive attitudes. And for the next five decades, SpeakOUT speakers continued that tradition and expanded our inclusiveness of the rich and varied identities of our LGBTQ+ community.
Our speakers’ stories were shaped by the AIDS epidemic, workplace discrimination, the fight for marriage equality, the campaign against “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and during the more recent fight for transgender civil rights within Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
And now, from local school boards to state houses to the Supreme Court, the prejudiced narratives of fear and hate are once more being spoken far too often against our community. Fortunately, SpeakOUT has 50 years of success sharing the true stories of LGBTQ+ lives to educate, change minds and hearts, create strong allies, and inspire LGBTQ+ leaders.
So we invite you at this critical moment to celebrate those 50 years with us on October 26 at District Hall in the Seaport District and help us meet the present challenge, just as we’ve been doing since our founding in 1972.
