As the 2022 General Election on Nov. 8 approaches, the Human Rights Campaign has released its Congressional Scorecard for Equality in the 117th Congress, which rates both US Senators and Congresspersons on their records of legislative support for LGBTQ+ people.
Nine of the twelve US Senators from New England scored perfect 100s: Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey from Massachusetts; Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire; Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse from Rhode Island; Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy from Connecticut; and Bernie Sanders from Vermont.
Senators Patrick Leahy from Vermont received a score of 94; Angus King from Vermont, 92; and Susan Collins, also from Maine, 51.

“We hope the 117th Congressional Scorecard will help you to stay informed on your elected officials’ records on key issues that impact the LGBTQ+ community,” said HRC Interim President Joni Madison in her introduction. “We hope it serves as a valuable tool in holding your elected officials accountable in our shared effort toward achieving equity and equality for all.”
