Boston Pride Hockey is aiming to expand their “inclusive programming to more LGBTQ+ players and allies throughout New England,” according to a recent posting on their Facebook page, and they’re skating into the Ocean State to score that goal.
A recent report by The Providence Journal previews the league’s partnership with the Providence Bruins in an upcoming Pride Night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. (Originally scheduled in January, the date just moved to April 9 due to pandemic precautions). The Journal’s article also scores by showing what the league already means to some of Pride Hockey’s Ocean State players.
“We’re just trying to grow hockey in the LGBT community,” Jim O’Connor of Little Compton, RI told The Providence Journal. “There are a lot of former players out there who played in high school and even at the college level who don’t have a welcoming, safe place to play.”
Reports The Providence Journal:
[On April 9], the Boston Pride Hockey League [has] scheduled a special event at the Providence Bruins game at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Organizers want to draw other Rhode Islanders like [some already playing in the leage] into the game.
The league wants to find enough local skaters — of all ages, genders and skill levels — to form a few Rhode Island teams to compete with the four teams it has now.
The Pride Night event in April will offer discounted game tickets for friends, family and interested skaters through its website: bostonpridehockey.org.
Following the Providence Bruins game, everyone will be invited to watch a friendly scrimmage between the league’s Boston players and the Rhode Islanders already on the league roster.
