The Peabody Institute Library in Peabody, Mass. will celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility, tomorrow, March 31, by hosting a virtual evening of storytelling, poetry, historical presentations and more from transgender, nonbinary and allied community members. All ages and genders are welcome, and since it’s online, people from all over can participate.
“Be Seen: Transgender Day of Visibility” takes place Wednesday, March 31, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the comfort of one’s own homes via Zoom. You can attend for free by going to the event’s sign-up page at bit.ly/2O7avVo.
Here’s the scoop from the Library:
The event will be emceed by Librarian Gabi Toth, and features our own Gabe Jayroe to lead us off with a presentation on why Trans Visibility matters. Then, transgender and nonbinary community members and their allies will share stories, poems, and prose to make their voices heard. We’ll also leave time at the end for community discussion and Q&A.
For our headliner, we have writer/performer, activist and poet Laurie Wolfe. Laurie has been been a speaker and trainer with SpeakOut Boston for the last 16 years. She’s also appeared in the Vagina Monologues with VDay Boston for three years, and in Bilicious at the Club Cafe for four years, telling stories about her life as a Jewish BLT.
“Held annually on March 31, International Transgender Day of Visibility is a time to celebrate transgender and non-binary people around the globe and acknowledge the courage it takes to live openly and authentically,” says the Human Rights Campaign. “Advocates also use the day to raise awareness around discrimination and violence that trans people still face.”
