Massachusetts is the New England state with the most corporations earning a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2021 Corporate Equality Index.
Forty-eight Bay State–based corporations earned HRC’s top score of 100, designating them as “Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality.” Connecticut follows with 15 top-score earners, Rhode Island with three, and one each for Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.
Some 96 corps across New England participated in the 2021 study and every one of them, regardless of their scores, “continue to show incredible growth in the number of employers that are committed to implementing LGBTQ-inclusive policies and practices,” found HRC. The average score for participating corporations, for example, was 92, while nonparticipating corps earned only an average of 26.
“Our participating companies know that building an LGBTQ-inclusive workplace is not just the right thing to do — it is also the best business decision — allowing companies to attract, retain and engage top talent,” said HRC President Alphonso David.
HRC’s Corporate Equality Index is the national benchmarking tool on policies and practices pertinent to LGBTQ employees. Criteria include nondiscrimination policies, equitable benefits for LGBTQ workers and their families, support for inclusive culture and corporate social responsibility.
