Leaders of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus applauded the historic confirmation on Feb. 2 of Pete Buttigieg to be Secretary of Transportation. On Feb. 2, Secretary Buttigieg became the first openly LGBTQ person confirmed by the Senate to serve in the Cabinet. And the Senate vote for Buttigieg came in at a decisive 89–13.
From the New England neck of the woods, congratulations came from US Congressmen and LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus Co-Chairs David Cicilline and Chris Pappas.
“I am proud to congratulate Mayor Pete Buttigieg on his confirmation by the Senate to serve as Secretary of Transportation. As a former mayor, he is incredibly well-qualified to serve in this role and help rebuild our country’s bridges, roads, rail lines, and waterways,” said Equality Caucus Chair David Cicilline of Rhode Island.
“As the first openly LGBTQ+ person to be confirmed for a position in the Cabinet, he will remain a visible role model for young LGBTQ+ people in our country. This is important progress for America and a very proud day for our community,” Cicilline said.
“I am proud to see our nation confirm the appointment of the first openly gay cabinet member, which I know will provide hope to so many Americans that their talents and contributions will not go unnoticed simply because of who they are,” said Equality Caucus Co-Chair Chris Pappas of New Hampshire.
“I look forward to working with Secretary Buttigieg to advance a transformative and bipartisan infrastructure plan that moves our nation and our economy forward,” Pappas said.
