Holyoke, Massachusetts Mayor Alex Morse, the city’s youngest and first openly gay person elected to that role 10 years ago, is a top candidate to become Provincetown’s next town manager.
“I’m excited for this opportunity. It is a special place for me and a place that I have visited often,” he told MassLive, which reports:
Morse and two other candidates were interviewed by the Provincetown Select Board in a public meeting held remotely on Wednesday night. The board did not make any decisions and is expected to continue deliberations on Thursday.
Morse announced in January that he would not be running for re-election for mayor this year. He is serving his 10th year in the position after being elected as the city’s youngest mayor when he was 22 and shortly after graduating from Brown University. …
Provincetown, with a year-round population of about 3,000 people that increases to as high as 80,000 in the warm months, is a well-known summer resort that attracts people from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Morse said the interview went well and gave him a chance to highlight his experience as mayor and the things he has done in Holyoke.
“I want to pivot away from being a candidate but I want to do what I think I’m good at after being mayor for 10 years,” he said.
Morse last year unsuccessfully tried to unseat U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield in a bruising campaign. He previously ran four successful campaigns for mayor.
While he said he loves his hometown of Holyoke, Morse said he is ready to move onto the next chapter of his career. If offered the position, Mose said he is willing to leave the mayor position before his term is completed, but said his start date would be subject to negotiations.
The other candidates for the position are Jennifer Pinck, of Provincetown, who founded a construction management company and Kevin Hepner, of Boston, a certified public accountant who has leadership experience in finance and administration.
