Former Portsmouth City Councilor Rebecca Perkins Kwoka last night became the first openly LGBTQ woman elected to the New Hampshire Senate. Voters in Perkins Kwoka’s district — which encompasses Durham, Lee, Madbury, Newfields, Newington, Newmarket and Portsmouth — overwhelming supported her, giving her 66.92% of the vote.
She joins US Congressman Chris Pappas, in another decisive win, and several other LGBTQ candidates from the Granite State celebrating victories after the Nov. 3 election. Plus more results for a few other LGBTQ candidates around the state are still coming in.
Reports Seacoast Online:
Perkins Kwoka shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday night declared victory in her race, releasing the following statement via Twitter: “With unofficial results reported out of each precinct, we are proud to declare a strong victory. I am humbled to become the next state Senator from District 21, and grateful to the residents of Portsmouth, Durham, Madbury, Lee, Newington, Newfields, and Newmarket for electing me.”
Perkins Kwoka of Portsmouth said her top priority is protecting people’s jobs and homes.
“So many small businesses have already suffered so much and a lot of residents are depending on unemployment,” she said. “Making sure we do our best with state budgeting and federal aid packages to keep people safe is critical.”
In July, Perkins Kwoka received major endorsements from the national political action committees LPAC and EMILY’s List.
