COVID-19 is hardly the first time that the federal government has fumbled its response to a deadly pandemic out of willful ignorance. See: the devastation wrought by the AIDS crisis, especially as it relates to the LGBTQ community. And so, it feels particularly timely to commemorate World AIDS Day with the New Haven Pride Center, which is producing a dramatic virtual performance in coordination with the New Haven Mayor’s Task Force on AIDS. For this program, artistic director Noah Michael Smith will use music, movement, and video for an innovative presentation of “Night Sweats,” a poem written by veteran Connecticut HIV activist Alex Garbera at the height of AIDS-related deaths in 1990. “Night Sweats” will be followed by “Love Songs,” an original composition by Smith that will be set to video and movement by local LGBTQ and HIV+ activists.
