Last year, Worcester Pride drew its largest-ever crowds with more than 3,000 participants and about 150 vendors, according to the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. And the Worcester Pride Association’s annual LGBTQA parade and festival, traditionally held in early September, seems to be on track for another great celebration next year, in 2021.
This year’s 2020’s Pride events in Worcester, however, were put on hold like so many others across New England, and around the world, due to the pandemic.
However, thanks to the efforts of Nathan Manna of Northbridge, Massachusetts’ Democratic Town Committee, a Pride Flag-raising ceremony will take place this Tuesday, September 8, at 4 p.m. in front of City Hall, located at 455 Main St. in Worcester. Manna, who also serves as Youth Corresponded at Pride TV with Dale LePage, will host the event.
Says, Manna on the Facebook event announcement:
Even though there is no Worcester Pride occurring this year due to COVID-19, I received permission from the City to raise the Pride flag on the day that it traditionally is raised as I think it’s important symbol — especially to LGBTQ youth.
There will be a brief speaking program before the flag is raised including [Worcester Mayor Joe] Petty reading the proclamation establishing Pride Month in Worcester, and a moment of silence for the LGBTQ lives lost due to senseless hate and violence. Masks & social distancing required.
