The COVID-19 pandemic may have postponed Keshet’s OUTstanding! Boston gala, originally scheduled for April 22, but the national grassroots organization that works for the full equality of LGBTQ Jews in Jewish life, is celebrating its 2020 honorees with online conversations. The talks will be hosted by popular gala emcee, author and educator S. Bear Bergman.
The first of the honorees to participate in an online conversation is Rabbi Becky Silverstein, founding rabbi of Beyn Kodesh l’Chol, an emergent Jewish communal project based in Jamaica Plain. As a SVARA Teaching Fellow, he teaches Talmud to queer and trans Jews. He also serves on the boards of Keshet, The Jewish Studio Project (chair), and SVARA (chair), and is a member of the current cohort of the Schusterman Fellowship.
The online conversation with Rabbi Silverstein starts at 7 p.m. on April 20. Register in advance to join the free April 20 conversation with Rabbi Silverstein at https://bit.ly/Keshet4-20. Login information will be emailed to registrants shortly before the start of the event.
Describing the talk, Keshet says, “Rabbi Silverstein believes in the power of community, Torah, and silliness in transforming the world.” Along with Bergman, Keshet’s director of eduction and training, Rabbi Buck-Yael, will join Rabbi Silverstein “to explore some of Silverstein’s favorite Jewish texts and discuss how to build a Jewish community and world that allows everyone to express their full selves.”
A second talk with the other OUTstanding! Boston honoree, Jacob Lemay and the Lemay Family, advocates for transgender and non-binary rights, is yet to be announced. To find out more, click here.
With offices in Boston, New York and San Francisco, Keshet equips Jewish organizations with the tools to build LGBTQ-affirming communities, create spaces for queer Jewish teens to feel valued as queer and Jewish, and mobilize the Jewish community to fight for LGBTQ justice nationwide.
