On Monday, March 2, the official ribbon will be cut at a grand opening ceremony for Rhode Island’s first LGBTQ health clinic—Open Door Health, located at 7 Central Street in Providence. A reception and open house follow the ceremony, which begins at 10 a.m.
Speakers will include the center’s Executive Director Dr. Amy Nunn, Governor Gina Raimondo, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Congressman David Cicilline, Mayor Jorge Elorza and other city dignitaries, the center’s Medical Director Dr. Philip Chan and Rhode Island Foundation President and CEO Neil Steinberg.
Open Door Health aims “to improve the health and quality of life for LGBTQ Rhode Islanders, many of whom face disparities in access to health care and health outcomes, by providing high-quality, culturally congruent health care to RI’s LGBTQ population. Open Door Health’s work is driven by RIPHI’s approach to integrating efforts to advance community health, reduce health disparities, develop innovative programs and train the public health workforce,” states RIPHI in a recent release.
“The Rhode Island Public Health Institute (RIPHI), a 501c3 organization that promotes community health and the elimination of health disparities, will open their new health clinic to provide sexual health and primary care services to Rhode Island’s LGBTQ community. Open Door Health will offer primary care services and express HIV, sexually transmitted disease (STD) and Hepatitis C (HCV) screening services. Open Door Health will be the first clinic in Rhode Island dedicated to serving the needs of the LGBTQ community as a core function of its mission. Open Door Health has been supported by federal, state, and philanthropic funding through RI EOHHS, the federal Ryan White Program, and local foundations. Open Door Health programs have been developed with technical assistance from the RI Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).”
