For the first time in 38 years, the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has canceled an upcoming concert. Scheduled for this weekend, March 14 and 15, BGMC’s highly anticipated “Born This Way” concert has been canceled in response to Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker’s recommendation to cancel all nonessential public gatherings as a cautionary measure against COVID-19 (“coronavirus”).
“‘Born This Way’ [was to be] Boston’s feel-good concert of the Spring,” said BGMC Executive Director Craig Coogan in a press release a few weeks back.
But hopes prevail the show may go on at a later date.
“In the days ahead Maestro Reuben will be reflecting on how best to bring the message of this concert to the stage. We will let you know the specifics, but we are committed to bringing this message of love and acceptance in the face of ignorance and bullying to our stage,” said Coogan and BGMC Board President Al O’Connell in a press release announcing the show’s cancellation.
Coogan and O’Connell went on to say:
