The Boston Celtics honored professional Strong Man Rob Kearney of Easthampton, Massachusetts, with their Heroes Among Us award. The Celtics recognized Kearney at their second annual Pride Night, held on Feb. 7 in front of a cheering crowd of thousands during a match-up against the Atlanta Hawks. (The Celtics won.)
Notes a Boston Celtics press release:
At just 27 years old, Rob has already competed all over the world and holds records in multiple events. But, what took the most strength was being the first openly gay professional to participate in Strong Man Competitions. Today, Rob speaks nationwide advocating for inclusion in sports, and his courage has redefined what it means to be one of the world’s strongest men.
In recognition of Pride Night, Rob Kearney was honored as a Hero Among Us for his advocacy efforts on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community.
Since its establishment in 1997 by the Boston Celtics, The Heroes Among Us program has recognized outstanding individuals who have made exceptional and lasting contributions to their communities. The award is presented at every Celtics home game and pays tribute to the heroic achievements of these outstanding citizens.
