If you like your social satires with a little bit of sugarcoating, check out “The Cake,” a new ripped-from-the-headlines play by Bekah Brunstetter. Brunstetter, a writer-producer on the hit NBC show “This Is Us,” tackles religious freedom and homophobia in this funny but heartfelt story about a traditional Southern baker who refuses to bake a cake for the lesbian wedding of a woman she otherwise loves like a daughter. It’s a timely look at how people try to reconcile their marriages to competing convictions.
