The community has voted, the online polls are closed and tallied, and the theme for 2019 Boston Pride can now be announced.
Without further ado, Boston Pride’s 2019 theme will be “Looking Back…Loving Forward” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising and also all of the people fighting for LGBTQ rights between then, now and to come.
In keeping with tradition, the Greater Boston community nominated themes starting in late 2018, then voted on them in early 2019, grassroots-style, to arrive, now, on a brand new Boston Pride theme.
“‘Looking Back…Loving Forward’ acknowledges the people and Pride groups who have come before us who have helped us strengthen our community. The fight for our rights must continue as well as fighting for our ability to love ourselves and each other freely without fear of hate or persecution,” said Linda DeMarco, acting president of Boston Pride.
“In honor of the 50th anniversary of Stonewall,” read its nomination description, “this theme is meant to encourage the community to reflect back on the many challenges and incredible victories of the LGBTQ+ community in that time. Acknowledging the many people and Pride’s that have come before us will only help strengthen our community as we continue to fight for our rights and the ability to love ourselves and each other freely without fear of hate or persecution.”
Pride Week festivities are slated for May 31–June 9 this year, with the big parade taking place on Saturday, June 8. For more on all things Boston Pride, go to bostonpride.org.
