Boston Mayor Walsh and Boston Pride are leading a vigil at 6 p.m. today, Monday, June 12, at City Hall Plaza, in memory of the victims of yesterday’s mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.
“Join us in solidarity with the families of those who lost their lives for simply being out and proud,” reads a statement on the Boston Pride website, which goes on to say: “Boston Pride extends our sympathies to the victims and families of the tragic Orlando nightclub massacre and we stand in unison with the LGBT community of Orlando to condemn this vicious act.
Yesterday, on the last day of Boston Pride Week, all five Pride block parties held a moment of silence followed by a candlelight vigil in Copley Square, outside Trinity Church. The Copley Square vigil was led by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Along with honoring the victims and their families, friends and loved ones, the Sisters led the crowd in a rousing (and cathartic) shout-out of support and solidarity. During all of yesterday’s Pride events, the mayor’s office and Boston police officials assured the community that security had been increased around all Pride events and other public gatherings.
