Boston Pride made history last year when a group of Irish-proud LGBT people was officially invited to march in South Boston’s historic—and very traditional—2015 St. Patrick’s Day Parade. And march they did!
Now, for the second year, the Irish LGBT contingency is marching under the Boston Pride banner in South Boston’s 2016 parade, which takes place on Sunday, March 20, starting at 1 p.m. Organized by the Allied War Veteran’s Council, the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the longest running public parade in the United States.
“We were thrilled with the positive response from parade-goers last year as Boston Pride marched through the streets of South Boston,” said Sylvain Bruni, president of Boston Pride, in a Feb. 22 press release. “There are many members of Boston Pride who are veterans and of Irish descent and being able to march in the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade for the second year is a great accomplishment for us all.”
With its mission to build and strengthen connections between the LGBT and broader communities, Boston Pride fosters diversity, unity, visibility, and dignity for all. Its main event, Pride Week, will be held June 3-12 this year, but the organization supports educational, advocacy, and awareness events and activities—like the Saint Patrick’s Day marchers—year round.
“This is truly another great moment for Boston Pride, for the LGBT community and for South Boston, as we prepare for our second St. Patrick’s Day Parade,” said Bruni. “We are looking forward to honoring the Irish heritage of the members of our community and our veterans. We invite everyone to join us for this celebration.”
