Happy Saturday!
Just thought I’d try to brighten up your weekend with a brief round-up of the LGBT news this week — or perhaps depress or bore you with it!
I mean, why not? I’m the editor of Boston Spirit magazine, serving New England’s LGBT population.
So here’s some the queer and noteworthy events from the past seven days.
This Queer Week!
⁃ Perhaps the biggest news comes from Alabama, where the state’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore reissued his administrative order to not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. I know he doesn’t like the US Supreme Court’s gay marriage ruling. But isn’t defying it what Kim Davis did? Shouldn’t he go to jail for that? Just askin.
⁃ Meanwhile, at a Staten Island campaign event this week, someone asked GOP Presidential candidate Ben Carson: “Do you think I chose to be gay?” Carson’s response: “That’s a long conversation.” My response? I’ve got plenty of time Mr. Carson.
⁃ Now I said that the Alabama story is probably the biggest news this week, but maybe not. For what appears to be the first time ever, a court in the world’s most populous country, China, agreed to hear a case for legal marriage for a same-sex couple. Human Rights Watch is hopeful: “In China, courts often reject politically sensitive cases, so the fact that the lawsuit is accepted signals some official willingness to address discrimination against LGBT … people.” This is a good one to watch.
⁃ And in more, um, shall we say lighter news, our favorite gay American Idol second place winner Clay Aiken weighed in on his thoughts on why the ground-breaking television series is in its last season. It’s the judges, he says. “Oh good Lord … those boring ass responses from the judges!?” he tweeted. “I’ve watched root canals more entertaining.”
And that’s the wrap from the first full week’s queer news of 2016.
Happy Queer New Year all!
