“GLAD’s loss will be the Commonwealth’s gain,” stated Janson Wu, executive director of Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders in a press release on GLAD’s Senior Staff Attorney and Youth Initiative Director Vickie Henry’s appointment to the Massachusetts Appeals Court. The appointment was confirmed earlier this week.
Henry, said Wu, “is thoughtful and compassionate, thorough and hardworking. The citizens of the Commonwealth, and especially its youth, will benefit from her service on the bench.”
Wu went on to say:
Vickie joined GLAD in 2011, following a dynamic career and partnership at Foley Hoag LLP, and has been a strong advocate for the LGBTQ community as well as a respected colleague.
Vickie developed and has guided the critical work of our Youth Initiative, working on education, legislation, and advocacy with schools and agencies around New England to implement system-wide policies that respect and support LGBTQ youth.
She has also contributed her expertise to many of GLAD’s landmark legal cases, ranging from our two challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), to our work on the Michigan marriage equality case that was among the consolidated cases before the Supreme Court earlier this year, to challenging Social Security’s discrimination against married same-sex couples.
It is a testament to the excellent lawyering that we prize here at GLAD to see Vickie go to the bench.
Boston Spirit magazine joins GLAD in congratulating Henry on this well-deserved appointment.
