No question Pope Francis is being very generous with his time during his visit to the United States—what with his nonstop tour of public events and frequent attempts to break through security barriers for impromptu meet and greets whenever possible, at least with children.
For Catholic LGBT grown-ups and their friends who’d like to reach out to Pope Francis and catch his ear, GLAD has come up with a pretty ingenious way to share all that we’d like him to know about our community.
A recent GLAD press release explains how to submit a post to the Tell the Pope tumblr page “detailing your experience as an LGBT person or ally.” Here’s how:
- [Take] a photo with a sign to tell Pope Francis about your life as an LGBT Catholic.
- [Record] a video where you describe your thoughts on current LGBT issues as they pertain to the Church.
- [Write] a story or drawing a picture to illustrate your faith and how it is connected to your life as an LGBT person or ally.
The ultimate goal of the campaign is for Pope Francis to accept GLAAD and other LGBT-rights groups’ invitation to meet with them in person. As GLAAD points out:
With 76% of Catholics favoring laws that would protect LGBT people against discrimination, this is an opportunity for the Pope to hear the stories of those who remain steadfast in their faith, yet are often still alienated by a minority group within the Church. A meeting with those members of the LGBT Catholic community would be the beginning of a healing process between both communities.
