The Massachusetts Nurses Association announced on Aug. 11 their continuing support for Holyoke Mayor and US Congressional candidate Alex Morse after last week’s allegations made by the College Democrats of Massachusetts of inappropriate online contact and sexual relations with college students.
Reports MassLive.com:
“In his statement, Alex said he supports and will participate in the UMass investigation because students have a right to their voices being heard and their concerns addressed,” the union said in a statement Tuesday. “The MNA echoes those comments. We welcome anyone coming forward with their experience and are open to learning more information.”
The statement went on to say that as health care professionals they are especially sensitive to these types of allegations and do not take them lightly. But the union also reiterated its reasons for supporting Morse.
“Alex Morse is a strong, progressive leader. His history as an elected official and his positions on legislation and policy empower working people. We know Alex will bring new energy to Washington, DC ,and establish a crucial connection between the center of American government and the people of Western Massachusetts,” the statement said. “Alex champions causes such as Medicare-for-All alongside MNA nurses and healthcare professionals. We stand with Alex Morse for Congress.”
On May 10, The LGBTQ Victory Fund — the national nonprofit dedicated to electing LGBTQ leaders to public office — announced similar support in a statement: “Alex is taking responsibility for actions that made students uncomfortable and we support the independent investigation by UMass, despite no complaints having ever been made to the university.”
Victory Fund also noted that “it is critical the media and others avoid reinforcing tired homophobic tropes or sensationalizing this story because of Alex’s sexual orientation.”
