BOSTON, October 21, 2014 — On Tuesday, November 4th, the people of Massachusetts will have the power to choose who gets to fill various state executive and state legislature offices. This year, six executive positions are up for election: Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Treasurer, and Auditor. Various seats in the Massachusetts senate and house of representatives are also up for election.
While many have intentions of taking the time to learn more about the positions and candidates up for election and making informed decisions, it can often be difficult to find the resources to understand the purposes of various elected offices and explore where candidates stand on the issues.
To support others in this endeavor, the Hispanic Black Gay Coalition (HBGC) created and released a state election voter guide this month. The guide was designed to inform individuals on the different races up for election, educate community members on the roles and purposes of various elected positions, and connect readers to online resources to help them make inform decisions on who to vote for. The guide also includes relevant quotes that candidates have made on LGBTQ issues during their campaign.
The creation of HBGC’s voter guide is a continuation of the organization’s work to encourage civic engagement and voter education among Black and Latino LGBTQ individuals in Boston. Perviously, HBGC released a video series interviewing nearly all of the candidates that were in the race for Boston mayor in 2013. The series, which includes an interview with current Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, is still available at hbgc-boston.org.
